Great Ocean Road

The Most Iconic Destination in the State

There’s no better way to see all that South Western Victoria has to offer than a coastal road trip that spans 240 kilometers of rugged cliffs, limestone beaches, UNESCO-designated landmarks, national parks, and—of course—stunning views.

Only an hour and a half outside Melbourne, The Great Ocean Road is one of the most scenic road trips in the world, taking travelers from Torquay to Allansford. It was constructed between 1919 and 1932  by veterans and serves as a permanent memorial for servicemen who did not return home from World War I.

Since road trips are about the journey and not the destination, we’ll be stopping at iconic, one-of-a-kind wonders and landmarks that tourists come from across the globe to gaze at.

We’ll embrace the Aussie way of life, enjoying lunch in picturesque beach towns and taking the time to hang out with some local wildlife. Whether you’re on the search for some outdoor adventure, to get reacquainted with nature, dine on some coastal cuisine, relax on the beach, or just lay your eyes on some breathtaking scenery, the Great Ocean Road offers all.

Where We Go

Memorial Arch

To kick off this stunning coastal tour (though the start of the Great Ocean Road doesn’t technically start for another 30km towards Torquay), the Memorial Arch serves as one of the most photographed locations along the road. Erected in 1939, it honours the 3,000 World War I servicemen who built the road. Though the arch has been rebuilt four times due to car accidents and bush fires, the original sign remains as a recognizable, welcoming entrance to begin the journey.

Apollo Bay

Roughly halfway along the drive, Apollo Bay is a breathtaking seaside town that rests on the doorstep of Otway National Park. This fishing village has a coastline that’s worth the stop and food that’s worth a taste. We’ll pull over for lunch and give you the chance to take a bite of emu, cool down with an ice cream, or sit back and relax with a paddle of gin tasters.

Twelve Apostles

The pictures are stunning but they won’t compare to the real life viewing of the Twelve Apostles. Though now jutting 45m out of the Southern Ocean, these natural limestone stacks were once connected to the mainland. Today, they embody the Great Ocean Road and travelers from across the globe come to marvel at their beauty.

Loch Ard Gorge

Named after a 1878 shipwreck on nearby Mutton Bird Island, the Loch Ard Gorge offers relatively calm waters compared to the rest of this line of the coast. Stroll along the soft, sandy beach while taking Insta-worth shots of blue-hued waters and yellow limestone cliff faces. The Loch Ard Gorge is a great mix of history, heritage and natural beauty.
