A 3.5 hour drive from Melbourne and situated at the base of the Alpine Country, Bright is a great weekend spot no matter what time of year it is.
Hamilton Hume and William Hovell first explored the area in 1824, which was when they named the nearby Ovens River.
Bright was originally known as Morses Creek but in 1861, the name was changed to Bright after British Orator and Politician John Bright.

Bright offers an excellent choice of accommodation, from caravan parks to motels to Holiday Units, B&Bs to guest houses and serviced apartments.
There are also the Alpine resorts for those looking to hit the slopes during winter time.
Hiring a bike and exploring the area is one of the best ways to take in the views and enjoy the fresh, alpine air. The Bright to Porepunkah ride is one of our favourites.
It’s 6 kms of easy riding as well as a crossing of the Ovens River. Pack a towel and take a dip!
Otherwise a car or bus will allow you to explore a bit more of the area.
The Bright Brewery does a behind the scenes tour at 3pm every Saturday so make sure you’re back in town for that.
The King Valley is well regarded for its Prosecco. The mixture of fertile hills, water from the King River and Alpine air make for perfect Prosecco conditions. You could be forgiven you were in Northern Italy!
Every November there is the ‘La Dolce Vita’ Festival, which celebrates the regions food and wine.
Whether you’re into a nice pub feed or something a little bit fancy, Bright has it all on offer.
Bright is only a short journey away from Victoria’s best Ski Resorts. Mt Hotham, Dinner Plain, Falls Creek and Mt Buffalo all offer great skiing, snowboarding and snow play options.
In the summertime, these ski slopes turn into a mountain biker’s dream.
The Apex Lookout is a beautiful walk which gives a great view of Mount Feathertop (1922m), Mount Fainter (1833m) and Mount Bogong (1986m), the highest peak in Victoria.
The Canyon Trail starts in the heart of Bright and takes you along the Ovens River. You can cross two suspension bridges and also learn about the local area from the informative signs along the trail.
Ranging from simple and family friendly to more challenging, there is nothing better than exploring the area by foot.
Other activities available are horse riding, golf, day spas, kayaking and for the more adventurous, paragliding.
